Villains in the Bible

Promo EmailEvery story needs a great villain. Where would Star Wars be without Darth Vader or the Lion King without Scar?

The Bible gives us ample examples of those who do terrible evil in the sight of God and humans. While most of the time, we lift up the “hero” like Moses, Jesus, King David, we rarely look at the villains. What is disconcerting though, is that the Scripture is always a mirror. In looking at such villains, we might see ourselves in them. They, like we, are caught in sin and brokenness, committing terrible things in a sinful system that allows it.

So, these villains may be a mirror, but also a window which we can see the world and current events. Scripture is the inspired word of God, and the Holy Spirit helps us discern its meaning for us.

When I shared the summer series with some in our Sojourners Class, they said, “Please give us some hope.” And so that is where the good news of the gospel comes in. God’s grace is sufficient. Naming sin can lead to repentance. Repentance leads to forgiveness and restoration, even for the villain in all of us. God equips us to call out evil and to the work of joining God in mending and repairing the world.

So, worship and enjoy the ways God is still speaking to us through these characters and villains, like Pharaoh, David, the Devil, and more. Join us on Sundays, and if you are traveling, go to our Fort Hill YouTube channel where you can be in worship each week as a faith family, scattered and gathered.

This summer, I hope and pray, we all experience Sabbath — soaking up the goodness of God in worship and being together with community in rest and renewal.

Blessings and Peace,
Pastor Laura
